CIS (Center for Internet Security) is the trusted guide to confidence in the connected world. CIS collaborates with the global security community to lead both government and private-sector entities to security solutions and resources. CIS is an independent, not-for-profit organization.

 

The Director of Communications will be responsible for developing and executing the overall external communications strategy for the Operations and Security Services (OSS) organization within CIS. OSS is the organization within CIS that operates the Multi-Sate Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) and the Elections Infrastructure Sharing and Analysis Center (EI-ISAC). These ISACs are funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and support the cybersecurity of U.S. State, Local, Tribal and Territorial governments, and U.S. election offices, respectively. A core part of the responsibilities for this role will be close coordination with our Public Affairs colleagues at DHS, as well as in our member organizations.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the development and execution of the external communications strategy for the OSS organization
  • Lead the development of key messages for all OSS products, services, initiatives and partnerships
  • Lead, mentor and coach team members
  • In collaboration with senior OSS staff, CIS events and Marketing, develop and execute a thought leadership and external speaking engagement strategy for OSS and CIS Executives
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and DHS Public Affairs to develop the media relations and social media strategies to drive national and trade media coverage of key OSS program initiatives
  • Collaborate with internal teams to develop and execute a member communications strategy focusing on streamlining and continuously improving member communications
  • Lead audience segmentation and persona development activities in collaboration with OSS leadership.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and OSS leadership to develop standardized presentation material for use by the organization when presenting at external events
  • Collaborate with internal leadership to ensure a consistent and effective ISAC member experience in the development of the company’s new web portal
  • Speak at public engagements on behalf of the ISACs as appropriate and/or requested.
  • Lead regular media training for OSS staff
  • Lead the relationship with Public Affairs colleagues at DHS, to develop a comprehensive public affairs strategy that advances the policy objectives of CIS at both the state and federal levels
  • Act as a senior advisor for OSS leadership on external communications and reputation management topics
  • Collaborate with Senior CIS leadership to identify and effectively communicate OSS growth opportunities
  • Collaborate with CIS Government Affairs representative
  • Lead the development of the annual CIS Year In Review (similar to an Annual Report) document
  • Other tasks and responsibilities as assigned

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Marketing or Communications discipline*
  • 8+ years of communications experience
  • 5+ years of B2B communications experience with a focus on technology
  • Previous experience as a media spokesperson
  • Experience with a Content Management Platform (CMP) (Newscred or similar)
  • Experience with a media monitoring and measurement platform (BrandWatch or similar)
  • Experience developing and executing digital and social media communications strategies
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

It's a Plus if You Have:

  • Advanced degree in a communications, business, or information security discipline
  • Experience working with Federal, State, or local government organizations
  • Experience developing and executing integrated marketing and communications plans
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and executing crisis communications plans
  • Experience with Lean and/or Agile methodologies
