The Benchmarks Product Owner serves as the voice of the customer to guide the Benchmark Development Team (BMDT) in building secure configuration standards for systems, and associated secure configuration assessment and remediation tools with the highest mission and customer impact. They represent business and customer needs and priorities, prioritize and manage the product backlog, and incorporate feedback from stakeholders to guide continuous product improvement.


Product Owners collaborate closely with Product Managers, Engineering and development teams, as well as business stakeholders and executives to deliver valuable cybersecurity solutions.

What You'll Do

  • Work with the Product Manager to represent the voice of the customer.
  • Work with the Product Manager to define expectations with business stakeholders for prioritization and delivery of new Benchmarks coverage, defect fixes, and automation support
  • Maximize the value of the product during all stages of product development and delivery activities, including overall community health, subject matter expert (SME) makeup, Benchmarks scope, and product backlog management.
  • Provide scope oversight and guidance in development planning and assist in determining a given Benchmark’s timing and objectives.
  • Manage the Benchmarks backlog in partnership with the Product Manager. Inform and escalate to the Product Manager any significant changes to the delivery that has an impact on the product including milestones, delivery dates, etc.
  • Work with the BMDT to track and ensure features, defects, and enhancements are addressed in a timely fashion.
  • Work cross-functionally with other CIS Product Owners and Managers to ensure BMDT dependencies are prioritized and delivered by other CIS teams.
  • Help facilitate the CIS Benchmarks Certification process for third-party products with strategic direction from the Product Manager.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies such as stand-ups and team retrospectives; ensure the team understands priorities, milestones, and next steps in each Benchmark’s lifecycle.
  • Lead or participate in the required design and development reviews to present the output from the development cycles to key stakeholders.
  • Ensure all key deliverables are completed on time in accordance with the product’s milestones and approved standards.
  • Analyze feedback from the BMDT, and other data such as end-user feedback and operational metrics, to identify, understand and make recommendations on product needs to the Product Manager.
  • Participate in proposal responses, vendor product assessments, request for information\proposals, and technical interchange discussions as needed in support of Sales & Business Services, Operations & Security Services, and Security Best Practices business unit initiatives, corporate goals, and objectives.

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor’s degree* (or equivalent years of experience).
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience with experience in a product owner role
  • Advanced knowledge of agile development methodologies (Kanban, etc.).
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to understand complex business problems and identify and interpret business needs.
  • Some background in cybersecurity
  • Experience with secure configuration guidance and system hardening (CIS Benchmarks DISA STGs, etc.)
  • Experience with community-based development (Open source projects, etc.)
  • Demonstrated facilitation, collaboration, and influencing skills to drive decision-making among stakeholders with diverse perspectives and priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information in a condensed manner to various stakeholders verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of agile planning tools (e.g. JIRA, Confluence).
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

It's a Plus if You Have:

  • Background in the development and publication of industry standards
  • Familiarity with MITRE ATT&CK, D3FEND, and SAF
  • Product owner certifications (e.g. Certified Scrum Product Owner, Advanced Certified Scrum Product Owner)

*Additional years of relevant experience or a combination of an Associate’s degree or equivalent and relevant experience may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree.
