Overview

The Senior Director of Communications will be responsible for the development and
implementation of both the external and internal CIS communications strategies. The Senior
Director of Communications will directly manage communications activities that promote,
enhance, and protect the organization’s brand reputation globally. This individual will be an
ambassador for the organization and will need to leverage existing, and build new, relationships
with the media. The goal is to advance the organization's position with relevant public and
private sector entities, while driving a broader awareness and support for CIS

What You'll Do

  • Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications strategy to advance CIS's brand identity; broaden awareness of its programs and priorities; and increase the visibility across key stakeholder audiences.
  • Create a public relations strategy that will allow CIS leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media and key influencers.
  • Coordinate with the leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities, identify solutions, and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
  • Oversee and lead media training for CIS leadership and spokespersons.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders for all CIS print and electronic communications including press releases, the annual report, CIS website, and any new media; manage relationships with associated vendors.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders for employee communications including newsletters, presentations, reporting, etc.
  • Partner with staff as needed to ensure consistent messaging through all media channels.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and lead point person on media interactions that help promote the organization, as well as responding to crises or challenging situations quickly and professionally.
  • Exercise judgment to prioritize media and other public speaking opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations, and other supporting materials as needed.
  • Actively engage, cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage surrounding CIS programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects.
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budgeting, planning, and staff development.
  • Lead, mentor, and coach a communications team to support the development and execution of the communications strategy.
  • Other tasks and responsibilities as assigned.
 

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field.*
  • Minimum of 8+ years’ experience in planning, writing, editing, and production of newsletters, press releases, annual reports, marketing literature, and other print or online publications and directories in the U.S. and internationally.
  • Minimum of 5+ years in a senior management role with direct experience leading, managing, coaching and/or mentoring individuals and/or team(s).
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing comprehensive global strategic communications, media relations, and marketing methodologies to advance an organization's global mission and goals.
  • Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with top tier reporters and editors, and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements.
  • Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output.
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management, CIS's Board of Directors and staff.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

It's a Plus if you have:

  • Master’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field.
  • Experience in the cybersecurity or technology industries.
  • Experience in the not-for-profit environment.

*Additional years of relevant experience or a combination of an Associate’s degree or equivalent and relevant experience may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree.
